I’ve also included the meta viewport tag because this is generally a must have for any webpage to scale appropriately on mobile devices. Note, I have included the content in a ‘container’ div which is only used to center the content on the page. The variable is checked the next time the page loads (or another page in the site) and the CSS styling is applied accordingly.įirst will create a basic webpage with the core html elements: In this example the data is stored locally in the browser using localStorage. I’ve also included another basic version that has a really small toggle button only in the top right of the window. If you simply want to download the code you could right click on the link and select to save the source code to your computer. You will see that your selection is stored and applied when the page loads. Dark mode is defined as a color scheme that uses light-colored text and other UI elements on a dark-colored background. Focusing on India to think about the nature of storytelling and the relationship between myth and reality, Xu Dishan undid the binary distinction between ancient India as a soul brother and colonial India as a cautionary tale. It also suggests that instead of rewriting the past, myths can rewrite the present instead of using myths to establish a national culture, literature can use myths to imagine a transregional horizon. The reading shows how a shared China–India figurative domain emerges in the story to offer a new understanding of myths and how they function in modern life. The chapter elaborates on this literary device through a close reading of Xu Dishan’s ‘Goddess of Supreme Essence’ (1923). ![]() A close examination of his engagement with Indian religions and mythology in his fiction constitutes a vision of a China–India literary horizon through a literary device termed as ‘transregional metonymy’: tropes that travelled between China and India through the cultural exchange of myths. This chapter analyses the scholarship of prominent May Fourth writer Xu Dishan as gateway for understanding his fiction. ![]() 5/16/2023 0 Comments Msecure discount![]() ![]()
5/16/2023 0 Comments Battle of the verdun![]() ![]() As one German soldier wrote, “There could be no end to it until the last German and the last French hobbled out of the trenches on crutches to exterminate each other with pocket knives or teeth and finger nails.” The battle took over everything with the generals powerless to stop the slaughter. There were even reports that some French troops made bleating sounds like sheep as they were transported to the front lines. Scott Fitzgerald was correct when he said, “This western-front business couldn’t be done again…This took religion and years of plenty and tremendous sureties and the exact relation that existed between the classes.” The end result was young Frenchmen and Germans being led, day after day, to their deaths by incompetent, myopic generals. It’s truly impossible to imagine such an unnecessary event as Verdun. I just finished reading Alistair Horne’s classic, The Price of Glory: Verdun 1916. One of the commanders, the German Crown Prince, wrote in his memoirs, “The mill along the Meuse has ground down the hearts of the soldiers, just as it did their bodies.” It didn’t take long for a soldier to break down under such conditions. To die from a bullet seems to be nothing parts of our being remain intact but to be dismembered, torn to pieces, reduced to pulp, this is a fear that flesh cannot support and which is fundamentally the great suffering of the bombardment… Everyone had to share their quarters with huge rats that thrived in the subhuman conditions.Ī French solider described what really made Verdun so terrible, Others drowned in their trenches or suffocated from newly designed gasses. Human beings were literally torn to shreds by shells. ![]() The horror at Verdun is beyond our comprehension. Overall, there were almost 300,000 total dead and missing over the course of the fighting. Lasting ten months, it became the longest battle of all time with the highest density of dead per square yard of any battle in history. The Kaiser approved the plan and the Germans launched an offensive against the French at the historic fortress town of Verdun on February 21, 1916. If they do so the forces of France will bleed to death - as there can be no question of a voluntary withdrawal - whether we reach our goal or not. Within our reach behind the French sector of the Western front there are objectives for the retention of which the French General Staff would be compelled to throw every man they have. Erich von Falkenhayn, Germany’s Chief of Staff, described his thinking just two months before the battle of Verdun, Above all we have helped the French immensely by relieving the pressure on Verdun’.The German strategy was chilling in its cold-bloodedness. will smash him in his deep dug outs… Anyhow we have shown the Bosche that we can rush his line on a wide front and I think we shall penetrate the second line if the ammunition holds out. We are going to beat the Germans by heavy howitzers and trench mortars as they. I was promised 200 of these but have only received 25. We are not too well off for ammunition for our heavy howitzers and we require more heavy trench mortars, which have performed invaluable service to the French in this attack. It speaks well of the courage of the New Armies, but had they had more time to devote to training they would have been able to hold on to many points from which they were driven by a few enterprising German machine-gunners. ![]() 29 Brigades (about 100,000 men) were taking part in the first assault the percentage is not so high… I cannot speak too highly of the spirit and self-sacrifice of the rank and file. ‘The casualties have of course been heavy and the figures look large, but when one considers that. ![]() 5/16/2023 0 Comments Buzzbundle tutorial![]() ![]() The bends must be well rounded, I solved this by bending the threaded rods over a round tube. 5/16/2023 0 Comments Flight simulator x forums![]() It "appears" as if windows sometimes drops the process before FSX finishes writing/closing the file. I have proven that it doesn't take a crash for fsx.cfg to get corrupted, the last session in many cases exited just fine. The phenomenon is that the corrupt fsx.cfg looks fine to the eyeball (in notepad) but I suspect there are corrupt carriage returns or No EOF marker that causes FSX to this crash while reading it at startup. Lately with Windows 11, I too have been experiencing more instances of this symptom which is fsx.cfg corruption, but it did happen with Windows 7 too, just not as often. When we do that we have to re-do our settings and re-establish trusts again (all stored in fsx.cfg) but we don't have to reinstall FSX and add-on scenery isn't affected by fsx.cfg, Scenery is separate from settings. Forcing a "first time run" creates a new FSX.cfg with default settings. Instead of re-installing all you had to do was restore fsx.cfg from a backup OR delete fsx.cfg which forces FSX to do a "first time run" again. Given the aformentioned changes in the feature exposure metrics, all previous heuristics we had about good feature exposures are no longer valid. Return np.sqrt(np.mean(np.square(feature_exposures(df)))) Return np.max(np.abs(feature_exposures(df))) PREDICTION_NAME = f"prediction_"įe = spearmanr(df, df) I’d appreciate it if anyone proficient in R could post an R version of the snippet below in this thread. I know there are a lot of people here, who use R. Let’s start with a code snippet in Python to calculate maximum feature exposure, the new way. And instead of aggregating individual feature exposures with standard deviation, we’re now using root mean square as the aggregation function. We’ve gone from using Pearson correlation coefficient to using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient (which is the same metric used for CORR). The feature exposure metric has changed a bit since I last posted an implementation of it. On the other hand, models with high max feature exposure will likely have higher corr, but are also more likely to burn in the long run. Models with very low max feature exposure also tend to have low correlation. There’s a trade off between feature exposure and correlation. Bear in mind that it’s possible to train models with extremely low max feature exposure, which aren’t very useful in practice. To conclude the anecdote, I switched back to a more conservative model from the next round onwards and everything was fine (at least for the next round). In hindsight that model was “overfit” on a limited set of features and when the regime changed, it began burning heavily. The model that I’d used for that round was performing rather well on live data under another one of my accounts, before I decided to flip it over to my primary account. Models with lower feature exposures tend to have more consistent performance over the long run.įor a real life example of this, I refer you to the massive burn in r223 on my primary account. Feature exposure (more specifically, max feature exposure) is a measure of how well balanced a model’s exposure is to the features. A model that attributes too much importance to a small set of features might do well in the short run, but is unlikely to perform well in the long run. ![]() i.e features that have great predictive power in one era might not have any predictive power, or perhaps might even hurt the model’s performance in another era. With the numerai data, the underlying process is non stationary. ![]() At training time, the model learns a mapping between input features and the predictions. The idea behind feature exposure is as follows: Any supervised ML model from a very high level perspective, is a function that takes an input feature vector (X) and outputs a prediction (y). I’ll also discuss ways to reduce feature exposure (regularization and feature neutralization). I’ll try explain the intuition behind feature exposure, and why it matters. ![]() 5/16/2023 0 Comments Namechanger fly![]() “I probably won’t do it, but it is an interesting idea.”Īn FPC student but an Eckerd College graduate “We will need a lot more, but this would pay off the short-term debt and give us a base endowment from which to build,” I responded. Also, various other designs such as the Belgian FN FAL (Fabrique Nationale Fusil Automatique Leger) and the German HK G3 (Heckler and Koch) came into common use. The best known of these were Mikhail Kalashnikov's (1919-2013) AK-47 assault rifle and its derivatives and copies, and the American M16 and its derivatives. ![]() The submachine gun was largely replaced worldwide militarily by the modern assault rifle. The technological advances made during World War II and the advent of the Cold War (1947-1991) influenced further refinements throughout the world. The StG's and a contemporary Soviet design, the AK-47, changed the fundamental idea of the kind of weapon an individual soldier carried into battle. Germany developed several arms that branched off from the submachine gun as assault or battle rifles in the Hugo Schmeisser (1884-1953)-designed Sturmgewehr (storm rifle) 44, and a similar Mauser design, the StG-45. Other examples such as the Australian Owen Gun and the American Reising submachine gun are lesser-known designs that were used in the Pacific Theater. The MP-38 and MP-40 were the best known of these and are the ubiquitous submachine gun designs associated with WWII German soldiers. Germany continued submachine gun development with its MP series, the MP-36, MP-38, MP-40 and MP-41. It was used as a personal defense weapon by tank and vehicle crew members. ![]() A cheaper submachine gun, which saw continued use well into the Vietnam War was the M3 Grease Gun. The Thompson submachine gun saw service throughout the 20th Century and many serve still well into the 21st Century. Thompson (1860-1940), produced such well-known guns as the M1921 Thompson submachine gun, the famous "tommy gun." Thompson designed it as a mobile, light machine gun for use by soldiers on the attack as a "trench broom" or "trench sweeper" during World War I. Other firearms innovators, including John T. The Bergman weapons influenced the development of later German and other nations' submachine guns, such as the British Lanchester, Sten and Sterling, the Soviet PPSh-41, the Finnish Suomi KP/31, the Italian Beretta Model 38, and the Japanese Type 100. The Bergman was later developed into the MP28/II which was fed by a side-mounted 32-round box magazine. It utilized the same 32-round snail drum developed for the Luger P-08. The first practical submachine gun was also developed in Germany in 1918, as the Bergman MP18. These resulted in fully automatic versions of semi-automatic pistols such as the Austro-Hungarian Steyr M1912/P16, the German Mauser C96, and an artillery version of the Luger P-08 (using a longer and heavier barrel than a normal Luger), each with a detachable shoulder stock. Initial development of automatic small arms came from European inventors in Italy, Austria-Hungary and Germany. They included the Kalthoff repeater, the Nock Volley Gun, various "pepperbox" pistols, the "duck foot" pistol, derringers, double-barrelld pistols, rifles and shotguns, and other weapons of various designs. Multi-shot small arms came into military use beginning in the mid-1600's. These "small arms" evolved into semi-automatic weapons, and fully automatic submachine guns, machine pistols and assault rifles. They took a considerable time to reload and could be as deadly to the user as to an attacking enemy. Early attempts to invent a repeating, fully automatic weapon resulted in bulky and semi-reliable guns consisting of single shot barrels gathered together and hand-held as a pistol or as a rifle. The invention of a compact, highly mobile military firearm that could produce rapid, repeating fire to repel an attacking force or act as an offensive or defensive force multiplier had been sought for nearly 900 years. ![]() |
